Breaking News: My Job, I Quit It
After months of miscommunication and frustration, my job and I are parting ways. I have never quit a job after being there so briefly (only two years!) but it was time to go. I love the company and the people, and the compensation package is unparalleled, so it was a hard decision, but my boss (who is an accountant by day and a cop by night) becomes really hard to handle under pressure and I needed to let go.

Incredibly, the woman who owns the bakery next door to my house and whom I really adore, said OMG I NEED AN ACCOUNTANT when I told her I was on the outs, and has extended me a reasonable offer that should keep my head above water. It's comparable to my current package financially, although we will have to figure out things like vacation time and retirement since she has never had a professional employee (just her retail and kitchen staff).

I am very excited and looking forward to wrapping things up with the non-profit and moving on to new and exciting things. I feel confident about this decision and direction. Wish me luck!

Sounds like this was exactly the right time to do this. I am glad you won't have to handle that stress anymore.

Congrats on doing what felt right.

Wait, some places give compensation packages if you quit, as opposed to getting laid off? Huh.

Who knows, muffins just might be the economic currency of the future. In which case, your 401k could easily be maxed out FAST.

ALSO OMG have you ever been in a bakery early in the morning when the stuff is just coming out of the oven? you may never need to be there that early but you should do it a few times JUST CUZ.

in high school i was a hostess at a restaurant that had a big bakery section and i opened in the mornings on the weekends. i had to be there at 4:30 or 5 to get all the fresh baked muffins, fruit pies, breads, cakes, pies into the coolers/warmers. once the warming cases held most of the muffins/pies, the warm fruity baked goodness smell was overwhelming and just fantastic. it was an orgasm in my nose. i want to work in a bakery just for that alone.

Sounds like a win-win! Congrats.

Just make sure the new place knows you need about 8 days off towards the end of November! ;)

Hey, have you ever thought about going into business for yourself? Lots of small businesses need accountants on a less than full-time basis, and you can charge a ridiculous hourly rate and do pretty well for yourself ... I do only the bookkeeping work that happens to come my way, that's in my industry, for less than 20 hours a week, and that's pretty much enough for me to meet my expenses ...

Just a thought.

Unfortunately without a degree it's pretty hard to sell that you know what you're talking about/doing to anyone.

Not really - I don't have any degrees that have anything to do with accounting...

Sadly it doesn't matter what the degrees in, it's proof that you know how to be a cog. I have a hell of a time interviewing because people look incredibly confused when I tell them I had a non-traditional career path, as if it's impossible to learn anything not told to you by a professor.

Shoulda taken the hint, really.
