I got a mean call from the city of Caribou because I didn't register my dog.
I never register my dog. I think it's a stupid tax. ..and the boy isn't going to be in Maine much longer.
They wouldn't even know I have a dog if I hadn't been a responsible owner and made sure to get him vaccinated for rabies. This is just a tax for doing the right thing. Un-vaccinated dogs remain under the radar.
(By the by, most vets use a rabies vaccine that protects for 4 years, it's state laws that require rabies vaccination annually, not good medical practice. So if your kids have a bad reaction to the formula check with your vet, you might be able to skip a few years if you can dodge city hall.)
Well there you go Caribou. $6 for a little blue Maine shaped tag that says 2010.
I wrapped it up and plan to give it to McDudley for Christmas. ha.
That reminds me of the year my parents got me a AAA membership for Christmas.
ha, I've always been absurdly practical so I appreciated it. It just wasn't much fun to open Christmas morning.

I had a bad feeling about work when I pulled into the parking lot and it was totally full. Went inside and patients were in beds in the hallway, and being transported all over the place. Our little hospital now has more patients than at Cambridge. And they are SICK. Not our little cases of pneumonia, or nursing home dementia. ICU was full of dying patients. I knew what was in store for the evening. Me and my tech planned out how to make things go smoothly.
We did fine, but the nurses in ICU did not. I'm fairly certain there will be one more H1N1 victim today. Whenever you start running the multiple drips of pressers at high rates, they don't usually come back. They don't call Levophed "leave 'em dead" for no reason.
Caught a fatal error last night as well. This is what happens when staff is overwhelmed. Was chatting with tech about family, etc. and I look at an order and say "Is he on CRACK?". Tech laughs and asks if that was a rhetorical questions. She continues to chat with me while I figure out the correct dose for the patient. I hold up my finger to have her pause, and say " 'scuse me for a second. I have stop them from killing this guy".
Call ICU and ask to speak with the patient's nurse. Was told she was in the patient's room. Told the secretary to get her out of the room NOW! Nurse came to phone, sounded annoyed. I told her "Do not give the Neosynephrine at that rate. It will definitely kill him". I told her the correct dose and she starts thanking me profusely because she was just going to give it.
In the future, I'm going to refuse to send up drips of pressers at bedside for quick use. It is too easy for them to make this type of error. I'll mix it and keep it in the pharmacy for "just in case". That way I have time to review the order before they are actually giving the drug. There will be a short delay to buy just enough time. That was way too close.
There is an enormous difference between the dose 100 milligrams per kg and the correct dose of 100 MICROgrams per hour.

Okay, I know everyone hates travel questions, but I'm in a pinch and MBTA isn't really helping me. I'm trying to get from Hinghham (south shore) to Lowell (north shore). I can take the commuter rail from West Hingham into south station, take the t (red line to orange?) to north station, and take the commuter rail from there to Lowell. My question is, is there any other way to do it? Any alternative routes that I'm missing? Also, once in Lowell, I have to rely on a bus to get me to the exact street I'm going to (http://www.lrta.com/LRTA%20Bus%20Sc hed%2010410Final.pdf schedule here) which apparently stops running at 7pm. Basically I'll be leaving my house at 10, arriving at my destination at quarter of four, and leaving by 7 to do the whole trip home again. This costs roughly 35 for the day and is really stressing me out... I don't have access to a car, but any other options are really appreciated!!!
(PS: I'm doing this to visit a close friend who just got out of the hospital, so it's something that's really important to me, I just want to see if there's a way I can spend more time actually with her than traveling/stressing).

To help relieve my seemingly perpetual state of poverty, I'm selling a selection of books from my collection. Most of them have been sitting around my house for ages... It is time for them to go and I am selling them cheap.
If you like to read, please have a look! I'm a student currently working an unpaid internship, so I really need some extra cash. You know the story.
( Book list and details cut for courtesy. )
Plenty of books left. Check it out. :)

Stress is easing up a bit. Holiday hell almost over. Coworker has offered to work a couple of my shifts (I'm sure this is not for altruistic reasons. It will have a price later on. This is the absentee coworker, and she wouldn't be offering if she wasn't plotting something). I now have 2 days off in a row after tonight. I will be sleeping in!
Break up issues still no where near over. I feel like I'm not recovering fast enough. I don't want to be stuck in the past. I do not like being broken. I still cry at times. I can sometimes talk about it without crying, but sometimes not. I found a bracelet that her mother gave to me when getting ready for a party. It really bothers me that I never got to tell her mother goodbye. I cared about her mother. Visited her in the hospital, gave her money when she hit a crisis, and she even attended my graduation. I will miss her. I don't even know if she even liked me, but I know to me it feels like a loss. There was no closure.
Mattison thinks I'm getting better slowly. A friend mentioned that it is good to see me out socializing, and even smiling occasionally. Guys are checking me out again, though it might be due to the weight loss. But it might be due to the fact that my eyes no longer look dead and hollow.

Can somebody clue me in about some weird Massachusetts stop lights?
We saw one that was a green light... with a flashing red on top. WTF is that?
I've heard of something similar, like a yellow light with a flashing red on top.
Any idea?

I spent some time last night making butter. It was not difficult and actually pretty fun. It tastes fantastic, too - making it myself I had the opportunity to add more salt than purchased butter has, pink flaked salt from the coast of Australia. I like salty butter.
M came in while I was working and asked what I was doing. And I said "just churning some butter," like it was nothing. In a Laura Ingalls style way I do this every day, right?

Also as a byproduct, I now have just over a cup of really fresh buttermilk. We might make pancakes.

Aw, I'm kinda jealous of DC... if this is how they react to having >12" of snow, I almost wish we got it less often up here! Where's the friendly snow spirit, Boston?
Except for the psycho cop who started waving his gun. They can keep that dick, we got enough of those.
THIS IS FOR COWBOY GENE.
BOMBS, PEOPLE. THE GOV'MENT IS TALKING ABOUT THE STORM BOMBING ACK. I DO NOT KNOW WHERE OR WHAT ACK IS, BUT I FEEL SORRY FOR THEM.

SNOW RAMPS UP THIS EVENING...WITH THE WORST OF THIS STORM LIKELY
OCCURRING IN A 6-8 HOUR WINDOW OVERNIGHT AND EARLY SUN AS STORM
BOMBS OUT SOUTH OF ACK. HOWEVER...WE MAY HAVE SOME BL ISSUES FROM
ACK-CQX WHERE THERE MAY BE SOME RAIN/SNOW MIX FOR A TIME THIS
EVENING. WET BULB TEMPS AND SOUNDINGS SHOW POTENTIAL FOR RA/SNOW
MIX THROUGH 06Z BUT ONCE STRONG OMEGA MOVES IN EXPECT ANY MIXED
PRECIP TO BECOME ALL SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. THIS MAY CUT DOWN ON SNOW
ACCUM IN THIS REGION.

High: Heavy snow predicted. Harvey Leonard breaks into huge grin, can't keep his hands off the weather map. Proceed at speed limit before snow starts to nearest supermarket to pick up two gallons of milk, a couple dozen eggs and two loaves of bread - per person in household.

My dad recently came into posession of some old 78s of my grandfather singing. He'd like to have them transferred to a digital medium for posterity (and to make it easier for grandma to listen to).
He's tried doing it himself, without too much success. Does anyone know of any sort of resource that would be able to get the audio off of the old records, and clean it up so it's comprehensible?
Thanks, guys!

Hopefully this post isn't annoying or spammy, but I just noticed that some tickets for Sleep No More at the ART (www.amrep.org) have opened up tonight. It's really popular and is sold out for the next few weeks, so I thought if anyone is interested in going tonight, I'd give them a heads up. I've already seen it and it's fantastic. Highly recommended!
1. This is the kind of thing I think is wicked cool.
Tomorrow night's California state Open Division football title game is between Crenshaw H.S. of Los Angeles, which is 14-0, and De La Salle, which is 12-2 with the losses to nationally ranked teams from New Jersey and
Here's the link.
Crenshaw is an inner-city high school with only a paid head coach and a very small budget, plus all the issues of being an inner-city high school.
De La Salle is a well-off private school with all the advantages that brings. They get their jerseys through a deal with Nike, and they travel to play those nationally ranked teams.
I hope Crenshaw wins. I really do.
2. This one is just cool, because it's close to home.
California wrestling teams travels to Ledyard, Conn., for an exchange week with their assistant coach's old school, which is a perennial powerhouse.
If you read it, I know most of the Ledyard people referenced, and Lou Gabordi, the principal, was the coach when I was covering the team. He was one of the folks who inspired me to become a teacher.
Here's the link.
3. High school wrestler in Alaska is Old Russian Orthodox, and therefore keeps a full beard for religious reasons. When he wrestles, he wears a Mexican "Mysterio" mask.
I just think it's cool.
